From the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Moors to the stunning coastlines, historic market towns and gastronomic delights – there is so much that’s great about living in Yorkshire. Whittling it down to just ten things is really quite tricky, but in celebration of Yorkshire day on August 1st, we’ve done our very best.
If you’re just settling into one of our new homes near Beverley, Leven or Bridlington (or if you just love Yorkshire) read on to discover 10 things that make living in Yorkshire so special.
1. Birds & nature
The two huge reservoirs at Tophill Low are full of birds – 270 different species have been spotted there since 1959, and there are hides dotted around for brilliant bird watching. Along with 300 acres of surrounding woodland, wetland and grassland flanking the river Hull, it’s a great place to enjoy nature and spend time outside.
2. Award-winning beaches
There is plenty of sunshine and sand to enjoy, and Bridlington, with its two award-winning beaches and tourist land train, is a great place to experience the full joy of the Yorkshire riviera. North beach is pebbly and more rugged (and therefore slightly quieter), while south beach has soft sand and calm water for paddling. There are plenty of ice cream shops and fish and chip restaurants to complete the English seaside experience.
3. Michelin Star gastronomy
With miles of coastline and acres of farmland, Yorkshire is a treasure trove of delicious local produce. Its natural bounty has enticed a host of inventive and energetic chefs to the area, and now the gastronomic tour of Yorkshire has become something of a draw. There are eight Michelin Star restaurants in the county, including the Black Swan in Oldstead, Grantley Hall in Ripon, and The Pipe and Glass near Beverley.
4. Quintessential seaside towns
Hornsea is one of the most popular seaside towns on the East Yorkshire coast and makes a perfect family day out. Paddle in the sea, make a sandcastle, visit the amusement arcades and stroll along the promenade. It’s timeless, fun and the perfect gentle day out. Meanwhile, with its winding streets, cafes, bars, and gorgeous independent shops, Whitby is another favourite coastal stop-off. Rich with gothic cool, great fish and chips and old-world charm, it’s also a brilliant place for people watching too, as many visitors come to pay homage to Dracula and the spooky Whitby Abbey that inspired the book!
5. David Hockney
David Hockney’s bright, fun-filled landscapes draw on all that is brilliant about Yorkshire. The Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Lister Park is an essential visit for Hockney fans. The Hockney Gallery is dedicated to his work, giving visitors a playful introduction to his life and art.
6. Boating & watersports
From the River Nidd to the North Sea, there is lots of water to enjoy in Yorkshire, and one of the best ways to explore the area is by boat. The Bridlington pirate ship runs scenic tours around Flamborough Head, North Landing and Thornwick Bay, or a longer trip to view Bempton cliff bird sanctuary from the water. You could also try a private charter up the Humber estuary, or some kayaking or paddle boarding along one of the area’s many rivers including the River Ouse or the River Aire.
7. Dramatic cliffs
The white cliffs of Bempton are truly stunning. The views are wide and expansive, the skies are dramatic, and the wildlife is bountiful. About half a million seabirds gather at Bempton Cliffs between March and August to breed and raise their young. Puffins, Gannets, Kittiwakes and Guillemots can all be spotted, alongside owls, skylarks and kestrels through the summer.
8. The Wolds
Rising from the River Humber at Hessle and curving 79 miles north to Filey, the Yorkshire Wolds are the least trampled of any of Britain’s national trails. Peaceful and full of character, the Wolds offer lush rolling hills, perfect picnic spots and stunning views. Hundreds of species of birds, mammals, and insects call this area home and no matter how many times you visit, you will always find another hidden treasure to experience.
9. Beautiful Minsters
Arguably two of the world’s most impressive cathedrals – York Minster and Beverley Minster are must-visits for any visitors to Yorkshire. York Minster dates back to the 7th century and its scale and beauty makes it a much-loved destination. Beverley Minster is a gothic masterpiece at 800 years old, which flanks the centre of the historic market town. Wander inside and enjoy the sense of calm and history, or simply enjoy a picnic or a coffee outside in its shadow – it’s such an impressive feat of human craft and ingenuity.
10. The best fish and chips!
With such a plethora of great seaside towns, there’s no wonder East Yorkshire is blessed with some of the best fish and chips in the whole country! From Whiteheads in Hornsea, Lighthouse Fisheries in Flamborough and Naked Fish in Bridlington, you can sample this quintessential British dish in award-winning, sustainable settings until your heart (and stomach) is content!
