Early December is a time for making our homes festive and cosy, however, it’s often difficult to know where to start especially if you are in a new home this Christmas.
Luckily, we have done some research into the latest festive trends for modern homes, meaning you don’t have to just follow the standard red and green colourways. Even if you already have plenty of decorations from past years, you don’t need to invest in a whole new set – there are small updates and additions you can make to give a fresh feel to your existing pieces.
Here are 5 interior trends you might want to incorporate this year…
Festive Brights
A popular trend for Christmas 2022 comes in the form of a super-bright colour scheme.
Imagine colours that you would usually associate with a summer festival – reds, pinks, oranges, neon yellows and purples combined. These rainbow colours can feature as tree decorations, paper lanterns, or honeycomb balls adorning your living space and stairway.
Fill your festive dining table with different coloured candles in coloured glass holders and bring the place settings to life with coloured napkins. You can also pick up coloured drinking glasses and bowls relatively inexpensively from antique stores or second-hand shops too, and these will have much more of an impact than standard clear glasses.
Consider switching your gold or silver fairy lights to multi-coloured versions, which can be draped around your tree, doorways or weaved within large houseplants. What a brilliant way to add brightness to your home on those dark winter days!
Monochrome Moments
Black and white might not seem like a very festive colour scheme, but if you are wanting to deck your halls out in the most stylish and glamourous way, then monochrome is the perfect trend to incorporate.
Minimal, modern, and chic – a black and white decorated home works really well in a modern or new-build home, and blends into a Nordic styled home or an industrial one. Monochrome can also look equally stunning mixed with warm wood tones and more traditional, rustic style furniture too.
Using a monochrome Christmas décor scheme doesn’t just mean you have to stick to 100% black and white either. You can mix in accents of metallic shades such as bronze, gold, or silver, or even discreet pops of festive brights too.
Earth-friendly Décor
From sending recycled Christmas cards to giving second-hand gifts to loved ones this year, we’re all becoming more conscious of how to celebrate Christmas while having minimal impact on the environment.
Paper decorations tick all the boxes when it comes to eco-friendly design, plus you can keep these out all year-long, not just during the festive month if you wish. Paper decorations are easy to make and simple to hang and come in many different styles depending on your taste.
When it comes to accessories and table decorations, stick to natural fabrics such as glass, stone, linen, wood, and cork. Not only will these add depth and interest to your nature-inspired display, but they are also longer lasting and less detrimental than plastic and man-made alternatives.
Crackers are another festive staple that have being given an eco-makeover this year. The trend of reusable crackers is becoming very popular, and you can either buy these in the shops to save and re-fill each year, or you could also consider making your own.
Alternative Trees
Increasing awareness of the environmental cost of seasonal Christmas trees is urging us to be more creative in what we use to decorate our homes. Similarly, there are also mixed views on artificial trees and their impact on the planet also. So, why not consider a tree-less Christmas this year?
There are many alternative items that can be decorated rather than a standard tree, for example fallen branches, large houseplants, or smaller, cardboard cut-out tree replicas. Basically, anything representing nature can be adorned with fairy lights and hanging wooden decorations to create a beautiful Christmas display.
Wall-hanging Christmas tree displays are also growing in popularity this year. Not only are they less bulky than a standard tree, but they can help to bring a bare wall to life when hung with pretty pinecones, ribbon, and battery-operated lights.
Instagram-able Door Displays
Decorating the outside of your home for Christmas is just as important as the inside (in fact, perhaps more so as many more people will be able to see and appreciate it as they walk past).
Therefore, why not transform your front door into a showstopping display of festive fun? Start by creating a wreath design that fits in with your chosen interior theme (i.e, festive brights, monochrome, or nature-inspired) and then consider a matching festive frame around the outside of your door frame to further highlight your entrance. Your festive frame can be decorated with over-sized baubles, giant wooden candy canes or masses of winter foliage foraged from your garden. Either way, it’s sure to make a real talking point amongst all your neighbours!
