Bedroom tips for the best sleep

Sleep health is a growing industry, with everything from scented pillows to vitamin supplements available to help you get best from your bedtime. September has even been re-branded Sleep-tember, and right now there’s never been more advice available about how to achieve the perfect night’s sleep. But sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference, and we think that having a bedroom that makes you feel calm, safe, and relaxed is key. So here are our interior ideas for optimum restful sleep.

Blinds or curtains

Keeping your windows covered at night will help keep out unwanted light. A dark room helps your body find its natural circadian rhythm, meaning you fall into a deeper sleep. It also signals to your body to produce melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleepiness. Light floaty curtains may look beautiful, but they can be ineffective. Try some black out roller blinds behind them, or opt for heavier fabrics that will create a cosy cocooning feeling. An eye mask can help too.

Soft lighting

As you get ready for bed, a harsh ceiling light or bright spotlights can feel a bit much. Choose a few lamps to have in your bedroom and use soft orange bulbs instead of the blue varieties. This will help you relax and unwind from the day before you close your eyes.

The perfect bedside table

There are a few key things that you should have close by to help you relax in bed. Reading is a great way to unwind and escape the real world for a while, so keep a couple of books on your bedside table ready to pick up when you need. You could have a journal there too, so any creeping thoughts can be written down and forgotten about until morning. A glass of water, is always useful. And of course, a lamp, so you don’t have to get up to reach the light switch.

One thing to definitely not have on your bedside table is your phone. Bedtime should be a time and space for digital detox, so keep your phone and tablet switched off and out of sight.

Get a comfortable bed

The Sleep Foundation says that having a great bed that suits your sleeping style is key. Investing in a good quality mattress and pillow will help support your spine and help you wake up feeling rested. Mattress toppers and extra pillows can help you personalise your bed. Take care to choose sheets and covers that are comfortable too – natural fabrics like cotton and linen can help keep you cool.

And if you still can’t sleep…

Don’t lie there and get stressed. Get up, make yourself a herbal tea (chamomile or valerian are great for promoting sleep), and sit down with a book for a while. Having an armchair or a sofa in your bedroom is great for this. Snuggle up, get cosy and only go back to bed when you feel sleepier.
