Moving into a new home can feel like a blank canvas, but styling it doesn’t have to be overwhelming!
We’ve been working with Beverley-based Interior Designer Holly Wilson, from Ardent Design, to show you how to go from bare walls to a beautifully styled bedroom, which is centred around relaxation and calm.
Here are Holly’s recommendations for turning your blank canvas into a beautiful bedroom…

1. Placing your bed
Position your bed along the widest wall in your room, usually centred so that you can see the door but isn’t directly in its path. This position is often recommended in Feng Shui as it offers both balance and a restful energy for your mind.
2. Use calming colours
Soft, muted tones promote peace and calm, which are essential for quality sleep. You can add accents of your favourite colour with cushions, artwork, or a rug, but keep the overall feeling relaxed and restful.
3. Create a relaxed lighting scheme
Soft, layered lighting can help create a tranquil, sleep-inducing environment. Use dimmable bedside lamps in warm tones, string fairy lights, or wall sconces to create a cosy glow. Avoid harsh overhead lighting, and try to make the lighting adjustable for different moods—perfect for winding down before bed.
4. Keep the space simple & clutter free
Use storage solutions like built-in wardrobes and under-bed drawers to keep your things organised and out of sight. The goal is to create a serene, open space that feels inviting without overwhelming the senses. Mental clearing without clutter is our aim.
5. Relax the senses
Use scented diffusers and room sprays to immerse yourself into a relaxed state.
