From Blank Canvas to Beautiful Lounge

Moving into a new home can feel like a blank canvas, but styling it doesn’t have to be overwhelming!

We’ve been working with Beverley-based Interior Designer Holly Wilson, from Ardent Design, to show you how to go from bare walls to a beautifully styled lounge, which is focussed around improving your wellbeing.

Here are Holly’s recommendations for turning your blank canvas into a beautiful lounge…

1. Focus on Natural Light

Natural light is crucial for mental and physical wellbeing. Position furniture to take advantage of windows, use light, airy coverings to allow maximum light in, and consider adding reflective surfaces like mirrors to bounce light around the room.

2. Choose Soothing Colours

Soft, earthy tones (like warm neutrals, pale blues, greens, and lavender) help create a calming atmosphere. Opt for a neutral base for walls and larger furniture pieces, then add accents like cushions, throws, and artwork.

3. Incorporate Natural Materials

Wood, stone, linen, and wool bring an organic, grounding feel to the space. Choose wooden furniture, stone or clay decorative items, wool rugs, or linen cushions. These materials feel tactile and comforting.

4. Create a Cosy, Inviting Layout

Arrange seating in a way that promotes conversation and relaxation, without cluttering the space. Create designated areas for reading, meditating, or just unwinding. Ensure there’s plenty of space for movement.

5. Add Plants and Greenery

Choose low-maintenance plants like succulents, ferns, or peace lilies. Place them strategically around the room to add vibrancy and a touch of nature. Group plants in varying sizes to create a balanced look.
