Take full advantage of your new home in Bridlington this summer with our handy guide to the area. From picnics at Danes Dyke to a ride on a pirate ship, there’s plenty to explore.
1. Sewerby Hall and Gardens
With a Georgian mansion house, vast gardens and a zoo, there’s lots to see at Sewerby Hall and Gardens. It’s a firm favourite with local families, so if you’ve just moved into your new home in Bridlington, this is an easy trip out. The zoo is home to a range of animals from guinea pigs and micro pigs to sika deer and Cameroon sheep. Our favourites are the cheeky capuchin monkeys
2. Go to the beach
It’s the obvious choice, and you can’t beat a day at the beach with a bucket and spade and an ice cream. The North Beach is great for sand and paddling, while South Beach is more pebbly and rugged.
3. Picnic at Danes Dyke
Danes Dyke nature reserve stretches 148 acres around the coast of Bridlington. There are marked pathways for walkers, wooded areas for shade, and a host of wildlife to spot too, from sea birds and minibeasts to the bats that come out in the early summer evenings.
4. Bird watching at Bempton Cliffs
The white cliffs of Bempton are a wildlife marvel. It’s estimated that about half a million seabirds gather there between March and August to breed and raise their young. Puffins, Gannets, Kittiwakes and Guillemots can all be spotted taking daring flights over the waves. And there’s plenty on land too. During the summer Corn Buntings, Skylarks and Linnets breed in the grassland on top, while Kestrel and Barn Owls are often seen swooping for prey.
5. Take a ride on the land train
These novelty land trains run along the seafront, and they are a fun way to travel between the bay, and the local attractions. Under threes travel for free too.
6. Bondville Model Village
Just behind the trees on Sewerby Cliffs is the Lilliputian world of Bondville Model Village. There are more than 200 tiny buildings, from pubs and cricket clubs to boat houses and a castle. It’s quaint and strangely magical, and certain to fuel active imaginations. The best thing? There’s also a café on site serving freshly baked bread and cakes.
7. Wander the old town
Just behind the bustling seafront are the winding, cobbled streets of Bridlington old town. This area dates back to the 12th century and is now home to cafes and independent shops. There’s a weekly market too.
8. Walk in the Wolds
With gentle hills, chocolate box villages, and traditional pubs, a walk in the Yorkshire Wolds can be as restful or energetic as you choose. Take a picnic, pick a path and head off with your family for a leisurely ramble.
9. Take a boat trip
There’s no better way to explore the coast than by boat and Bridlington has its very own pirate ship. The standard 10-minute rides run from April through to October every day.
10. Fish and chips
The seafront is lined with fish and chips restaurants, and we think there is no better way to celebrate buying a new home in Bridlington than to head to the beach in the evening for fish and chips. So grab a wooden fork, bring you ketchup, and dig in.
