Diary of a House Mover (Part 1)

One month before the move:

We spent the morning investigating local moving companies, had to make sure we hired a reputable one. We didn’t want to end up moving into our new home and realise we’d lost a valuable item, I think it would have dampened the experience a bit. The company we went with actually offered us insurance, which is really helping to ease that worry.

It was great getting the call from the sales representative at Peter Ward Homes to confirm the move in date. Everything is finally coming together and I can confirm dates with the moving company.

We also managed to get a lot of the less exciting aspects of moving sorted today, so at least that is out of the way. The landlord has been informed we’re leaving, and we’ve set a reminder to make a note of the gas, electricity and water meters on the day we move out to make sure we pay our bills. We’ve also been able to arrange a few days off work each, so now we can start to get excited about moving to our new home.

All that’s left to do now is to start clearing out everything that we’re not taking with us to the new house, and we need to make sure we’re not clearing out anything valuable that we think is rubbish.

Two weeks to go:

The time is flying by. I can’t believe it was a whole two weeks ago that the removal company was booked, it feels like yesterday.

We’ve managed to get a lot more of the important pre-move items ticked off today, such as making sure our mail is redirected to the new house. The people at the Post Office were really helpful when sorting it out, and it’s one less thing to worry about.

All non-essential items are now packed. The spare bedroom is absolutely crammed with boxes labelled with every room of the house, but I’m so glad we’ve got everything ready and will be able to tell which room everything belongs in.

One week to go:

All of our subscriptions have been cancelled or diverted to our new address, and I made sure to call the removal company this morning and confirm our arrangements, everything is ready to go and we’re all getting more excited by the minute.

We did get a bit sad earlier letting the neighbours know that we were moving, they’ve been next to us for the last ten years and have practically watched the kids grow up so it was a little bittersweet. However, our new home has a beautiful big garden, so we’ll be able to invite them over and have a great time once we’re all settled in.
