How to make your new home more pet friendly

Pets are important members of the family, and therefore their comfort and happiness are essential when planning the move into your new home.

Luckily, buying a new build home can give you the opportunity to provide a safe and comfortable home for your family pet, thanks to their modern design and specific features. Not only this, but there are also many other things you can do to make your living space more pet friendly.

Below we have listed 6 things to consider before moving in…

1. Give your pet a designated spot

One of the first things you can do to make your new home more pet-friendly is to create a designated area for your pet. Set out their crate/bed and their food/drink in an area which is out of the way of busy traffic – ideally a space in a quiet and easily accessible area where your pet can retreat when they need some alone time. This is especially important on moving in day, which your pet may find especially stressful. If you can you might want to ask someone your pet knows well, to look after them on moving day.

2. Choose pet-friendly flooring

When selecting flooring for your new home, it’s important to consider your pets. It’s best to choose flooring that is durable and easy to clean, such as LVT, stone or tiles. Some carpets can be difficult to clean and can also harbour pet hair and odours too, so be sure to do your research first. Whatever flooring you choose, clean it regularly to keep it free of pet hair, dander, and other debris that could cause allergic reactions.

3. Use safe, pet-friendly products

Some household cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful, or even lethal, for pets to ingest. Be sure to shop responsibly and search for products that are as natural as possible and labelled either pet-friendly or non-toxic.

4. Create a safe outdoor space

Your garden or patio should provide a safe outdoor space for your pet to roam and relax in the fresh air. Therefore, make sure the space is free of any potential hazards such as toxic plants or sharp objects that could cause harm.

5. Offer plenty of stimulation and fun

Just like humans do, animals also need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy. As well as ensuring your pet has room to exercise, offer them plenty of toys and activities to keep them entertained. This can include interactive toys such as balls, puzzles and treat dispensers.

6. Secure any potential hazards

Before bringing your pet into your new home, you will need to ‘pet-proof’ it to ensure that any potential hazards are spotted and secured. This can include, locking cupboards containing potentially harmful products, and covering any open electrical outlets.

Taking a little time to ensure your new home is pet-friendly provides peace of mind that you will create a warm and welcoming environment for your pet, whatever breed they are. By following the above tips, you are ensuring that your new home is a space that both you and your pets will love.
